The Wilson (NY) Community Enhancement Charity was incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) in 1999. The charity started as an outgrowth of the Wilson Harbor Concert Series, which provided summer concerts at Clark's Park for the Wilson community. The charity operates under an all-volunteer board of directors, which consists of community residents or those with businesses in Wilson.
With the incorporation, the Charity developed the Linnea's Pool complex at Wilson Harbor and started the Wilson Community Swim Program. The program, known as Linnea's Swim School has provided free swimming lessons for hundreds of children from the town and village of Wilson. The program also runs an extremely popular daily adult water aerobics class. .
Past WCEC events include Harborfest I and II, Haunted Harbor I and II and the Taste of Summer. Past performers at the concert series include Big Wheelie and the Hubcaps, Gap Mangione, the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas, Universal Grill, Barbara Sinclair, Glenn Colton and noted children's author, Rafe Martin. .
The WCEC also provides Wilson with its first ever high-speed wireless internet (WiFi) hotspot. The hotspot covers the Boat House/Boatyard waterfront, Clark's Park, the town gazebo and lookout on Ontario St., and portions of the Wilson Pier, Tuscarora Yacht Club and Sunset Island. The installation of the wireless hardware was made possible by a grant from Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte. It is maintained by the WCEC through the help of our community sponsors. .
The WCEC has also helped provide another first for Wilson - the harbor webcam. Perched atop the tower at the pool complex, it pans and provides a panoramic view of the east end of the harbor, including views of the sunset in summer! The camera was purchased and installed with funds obtained from the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation. Like the WiFi hotspot, it is maintained by the WCEC, with the help of our community sponsors. .
The charity continues to run various community events. Fundraisers this year include the newly revived, Wilson Salmon Run 5K on Saturday, May 31, 2008 and the Sixth Annual Harbor Hoops, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008. Linnea's Swim School will begin again when school lets out and August will herald the return of our very popular series of "walk in" outdoor movies at Clark's Park. More details will be posted on the site as they become available. Please check back often.
